Student Portfolio: Matthew Barton, BFA exhibition

Matthew Barton

Growing up in the rural South, I was exposed to a variety of materials such as rusted metal and old wood. These materials and life experiences are the primary influences of my work, giving me the opportunity to reconnect with my heritage.

Though I may not be considered the epitome of the southern male, I am still a native trying to reconnect with my past and the southern landscape. By reestablishing this bond, I have started to draw parallels between my personal history and the stigma of the south. Through the use of storytelling and the mysticism that I find in nature, I exhibit the effects guilt, shame, religion and gender roles have on personal identity.
